Korean TV Crew Films at Hunter...
Your Personality, Nature vs. Nurture
The Hunter School was recently visited by a TV crew from South Korea filming an educational documentary called "Your Personality, Nature vs. Nurture" for the EBS Korean Nat’l Educational Broadcasting Channel.
The crew filmed in the school, the residences and interviewed several staff members as well as a few students.
ADHD has been on the rise in Korea and the
Producer wanted to learn about the key techniques and unique programs used at the Hunter School to work with these children.
The documentary will consist of 3 episodes which are each one hour long.
The first hour of the documentary will focus on “What do we know about our Personality”. The second hour is called “Personality and Environment, Extrovert vs. Introvert”. The last hour is “Personality and Learning Strategies”.
During their visit to New England, the crew also filmed at Harvard
University in Boston.
The documentary is slated to air in Korea in January of 2010.

Making a Difference...
Hunter kids walk to raise money for breast cancer
On October 18, 2009, Sarah Pirotta and three students from the Hunter School participated in the “Making Strides for Breast
Cancer” walk held in Opechee Park in Laconia, New Hampshire. This walk was held in different locations throughout the State of New Hampshire.
The goal of the team was to raise $200 for cancer research. Sarah and her kids exceeded their goal and raised 275!!!

CONGRATULATIONS TO SARAH AND YOUR TEAM!

Opportunities...
9th State Gym Offers Karate and fitness opportunities for our kids
The 9th State Fitness Gym in Plymouth, New Hampshire is
offering a wonderful opportunity for staff and the children at the Hunter School and New England Salem Children’s Village to take advantage of fitness, dance boxing and weekly Karate classes.
US News recently published an article called “9 Drug-Free
approaches to managing ADHD”. Exercise was one of the nine
approaches listed in the article.
Hunter and Salem children have always enjoyed tons of exercise and fun on our 137 acre campus in the White Mountains.
“There's increasing evidence that physical activity is good for the brain as well as the heart says Arnold (Eugene Arnold, Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Ohio State University). U.S. News has reported on research that linked aerobic exercise to kids' achievement in math and reading. Arnold's team is working on a pilot study to find out whether exercises that train the cerebellum, such as
running in place or navigating around cones, are more beneficial for
children with reading problems and ADHD than an exercise program that involves aerobics. Hallowell puts
exercise No. 2 on his list of so-called alternative treatments for ADHD,
behind creating a positive, loving environment at home and above getting enough sleep.” Megan Johnson, US News

a remarkable and special evening for all.

A Big Thank You...
To the folks that make it all happen...
In any organization, the biggest asset is all the people that make it happen. It’s nice to take a few minutes to thank all of the wonderful teachers, aides, houseparents, maintenance staff, chefs, interns, volunteers and everyone else who is involved with these amazing children here at the Hunter School and New England Salem Children’s Village. This staff is dedicated to giving these children the best opportunities to succeed, to develop positive self-esteem and to contribute in a positive manner to the world. The organization is led by a hard-working and caring Administrative team, and supported by a dedicated Board of Directors.
Inspired by the vision of Thom and Louise Hartmann, the Hunter School and New England Salem Children’s Village continue to look for new and innovative ways to teach and raise the children whose care has been entrusted to us. As non-profits, we are continuously looking for funding and support from those that believe in our missions. We thank everyone for doing their part in making it all happen.
